Mahama in France: The "One Health" Diplomacy and Ghana's Hospital Relief

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Lyon to co-chair the high-level segment of the "One Health Summit" alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The summit focuses on the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health — a framework that has dominated global health funding post-COVID-19. Mahama is scheduled to hold bilateral talks at the Élysée Palace in Paris on April 8, focusing on health infrastructure financing, trade, and regional security.
President Mahama's trip to France must be more than a photo opportunity; it is a critical avenue to address Ghana's domestic health financing crisis. While the President discusses the high-level framework globally, the National Health Insurance Scheme is struggling with arrears back home, leading to patients being turned away at emergency wards. The bilateral talks with Macron present an opportunity to secure direct concessional financing or technical partnerships from the French Development Agency to modernise Ghana's hospital supply chains.
