Football is About to Get Faster — IFAB's Radical Five-Second Countdown Could Revolutionise the Beautiful Game

Football's international lawmakers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), are considering the most significant rule changes in decades. Chief among the proposals: five-second countdown clocks for throw-ins and goal kicks, designed to stamp out the time-wasting that has plagued modern football. If approved, these rules could be trialled at the 2026 FIFA World Cup itself — making the world's biggest sporting stage a live laboratory for football's future. Additionally, further adjustments to the controversial VAR protocol are expected, following widespread criticism from players, managers, and fans alike.
Ghana's Black Stars have themselves been victims of time-wasting opponents in crucial qualification matches. Faster, fairer rules benefit technically skilled, attacking teams — which is historically what Ghana aspires to be. If IFAB implements these rules globally, the Ghana Football Association must immediately educate referees, coaches, and players at all levels. Ghana's youth players are the future of the Black Stars, and they must learn the new game's rules early enough to master them.
