Accra, Ghana – As digital threats evolve, so do the tools to fight them. Marking Safer Internet Day 2026, Google has unveiled a suite of new AI-powered features designed to help users spot scams, verify content, and protect their devices in real time.
While the global theme focuses on "Together for a better internet," the practical application for users in West Africa is clear: using Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a shield against the rising tide of digital fraud and misinformation.
Fighting Scams with 'Circle to Search' Scams delivered via SMS and social media remain a top threat in Ghana and Nigeria. Google’s updated Circle to Search and Google Lens features now act as a first line of defense.
Users can simply take a screenshot of a suspicious message or circle the text on their screen. Google’s AI then analyzes the content instantly, alerting the user if the message fits known scam patterns—a crucial tool for identifying "momo" fraud attempts before they happen.
Spotting the Fakes With the rise of AI-generated content, distinguishing fact from fiction is harder than ever. Google is rolling out:
About this image: A tool that traces where an image originated and how it has been used.
SynthID: Technology that embeds digital watermarks into AI-generated media to identify manipulated images and deepfakes.
Theft Detection for Android Physical phone theft is a major concern in urban centers like Accra and Lagos. Google’s new Theft Detection Lock uses on-device AI to detect sudden motion patterns—like a snatch-and-run—and automatically locks the screen to protect personal data.
Additionally, a Biometric Identity Check now adds an extra layer of security for sensitive settings, ensuring that even if a phone is stolen, the digital identity remains secure.
