SK hynix Wins IEEE Award for HBM — The Hidden Architecture of All AI

On April 26, SK hynix received the IEEE Corporate Innovation Award in New York for its mass production of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) — the specialised chip architecture that makes large-scale AI training computationally possible. Without HBM, NVIDIA's GPU clusters cannot train large language models. Without those models, there is no GPT, no Gemini, no Claude. HBM is the invisible foundation of the entire AI economy, and SK hynix dominates its production.
Ghana's AI ambitions are entirely dependent on foreign HBM-powered infrastructure. Every AI model Ghana uses runs on chips manufactured in South Korea or the US, stored in foreign data centres, and subject to foreign geopolitical control. The country has no domestic AI compute capacity whatsoever.
