The End of Human Refugees? IFAB Tests Full AI Officiating

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has announced radical experimental trials for a fully automated, AI-driven officiating system. Designed to eventually replace human VAR officials by 2027, the system uses skeletal tracking and predictive physical impact mapping to instantly call offsides and fouls with 100% geometric accuracy.

While Europe debates the loss of "human element" in football, Africa suffers from chronic refereeing controversies, match-fixing allegations, and infrastructural decay. Implementing AI refereeing could theoretically eliminate referee bias in the GPL overnight. However, the cost of installing the 40+ high speed cameras required per stadium means this tech will bypass Africa entirely for at least a decade, creating two tiers of global football.
