World Cup 2026 is Six Months Away — But Stadium Disputes, Cancelled Fan Fests, and FIFA Chaos Are Raising Alarm Bells

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is well underway, but the build-up has been anything but smooth. Reports have emerged of a serious stadium licensing dispute at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts that could jeopardise a key World Cup match. A planned FIFA Fan Fest in the New York/New Jersey area has been cancelled, denying fans a central hub for one of the world's most anticipated tournaments. FIFA continues to push ahead with its expanded 48-team format, raising legitimate concerns about fixture congestion and player welfare.

The 2026 World Cup is Ghana's biggest opportunity in global football since the Black Stars' stirring run in 2010. The expanded African quota of 9 slots (up from 5) works in our favour. But Ghanaian football must also reckon with its administrative chaos. The GFA needs to learn from FIFA's logistical lessons and build the systems Ghana needs to host its own continental tournaments in the future.
